Living Barefoot
For me, Living Barefoot is about a lot more than selling books. For me, Living Barefoot not only means earning income for my family, but it is being part of a community and inspiring others to take time to slow down and connect with their children, to encourage a love of reading, and to share the messages of acceptance and respect for others though these stories.
On Saturday I had the opportunity to visit my favorite local market. The Freedom Farmer’s Market is a great little spot where families come together to shop for local produce, listen to live music, and spend a little quality time connecting with others in the community. I am always welcomed so warmly here and the children love to use my little book shop as a library, taking turns exploring all the different offerings.
One of the highlights of this experience for me is seeing children of all colors see themselves represented in the books. I had a mom ask me on Saturday if there were any books with African American children as the main characters. I was able to quickly point her toward several titles and saw her young son’s eyes light up when he saw these books.
My son is able to come along to work with me and experience what it takes to set up a display, answer questions, make change, and work for several hours toward a goal. I cherish the opportunity to expose him to this. Living Barefoot for me means sharing my love for these books with my kids and seeing them grow in their awareness of the different cultures and traditions represented in the books and the value of a days work and what it means to be proud of what you do.
I have an exciting few weeks ahead and just stocked up in a big way to get ready for the Grant Park Summer Shade Festival and an upcoming book fair for the Willow School. Participating in community events and fundraisers is my favorite way to Live Barefoot and connecting with new people and seeing the excitement in children’s eyes when they have a new book in hand is really exciting for me!
